STARTING A VEX ROBOTICS TEAM
Things to keep in mind:
Take time to come up with an awesome team name. You will be given an identification number based on your school, such as 4270N. This number is what you will be referred to by other teams at each competition.
The number is randomly assigned by VEX Robotics upon registration, but your school or club can request the letter of each team. It helps to associate the letter of your team number with your team name. The name that your team chooses will be displayed in the rankings at competitions, and it is how other teams will learn to recognize you.
Some examples are:
- A VEX robotics team takes a lot of work.
- If you do not have lots of free time after school, this may not be the best club for you.
- The most important element on a team is dedication; each member on the team must be dedicated and focused on working on their robot.
- Most teams meet for a few hours a day, several days a week
- The VEX robotics season starts right when school starts, and ends in April
- A team will need to work consistently during this time if they want their robot to get done
The competitions are generally on Saturdays, starting as early as October, and continue until spring
- Be prepared to be friends with the people on your team.
- Make sure that you have the following roles fulfilled in your group (formally or informally)
- Team coordinator
- Builder
- Programmer
- Historian
- Design Notebook Manager
- Drivers and driving coaches
- Fundraising Coordinators
- Each member has to be able deal with stressful situations, work well with others, and be able to communicate thoughts and ideas effectively
